Steuma's optical principle is based on measuring the reflected light intensity which is linear to the refractive index in the area of total reflection close to the critical angle. Using a light beam with a diameter of 40 mm, a large prism, lenses and mirrors it is now possible to achieve high sensitivity to measure minimal variations of concentrations in a process medium. Using this principle you do not have to deal with the so called 'grey zone'. This grey zone causes inaccuracies as is with the principle of other refractometers. Stability is achieved by its patented principle of the reference light beam (not shown in the schematic) This reference compensates for all physical changes due to temperature differences between optics, process liquid and surrounding areas. IR-source and IR-sensors are temperature stabilized. The process temperature is mmeasured and is used to calculate the concentration of the process liquid.
